HERBERT MATTER (1907-1984) [PLANE OVER ALPS.] Circa 1935. Original photo-collage study.
12x71/2 inches.
Condition A.
Between 1928 and 1932 Matter lived in Paris where he studied at l'Academie Moderne under Fernand Leger and Ozenfant, and then he worked as a photographer and typographer in the advertising firm of Deberny & Peignot. He also worked with Cassandre. In 1934, back in Switzerland, he revolutionized travel posters, by using photomontage, sharp contrasts, close-ups and daring layouts. We are offering two of the original collages which are of exceptional interest and incredible rarity. This is clearly a study for his realized poster Fly to Switzerland which was published in 1935. The finished poster shows an exterior image of the airplane, with the Alps below. But from this study we see that Matter also considered a solution involving a shot from within the airplane! This image might have been less commercial, but it is much more dramatic, with only one engine propped up in the upper right corner of the collage and the vast emptiness of the Alps beneath it.
